Weekend Box Office: Hotel Transylvania, Looper Revive Box Office

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/30/12 at 10:53 PM CT

After weeks of plenty of disappointment at the box office, I predicted that this was the weekend that would turn things around. While the movie I was hoping would open in #1 didn't quite make it to the top, the overall box office was up 21% compared to last year and news like that makes studios happy and hopefully means good things for the future.

Hotel Transylvania was the top draw over the w...

Official FilmCrave Staff Verdict: Looper Movie Review

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/30/12 at 11:02 AM CT

Let's face it, we've been in a movie drought. Other than the limited releases success of The Master, there has been nary a bright cloud at the box office for a month. This week, however, Rian Johnson gave us hope in the form of a time-traveling action/sci-fi/thriller with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis playing the present and future Joe - the titular Looper. With all the sci-fi elements, i...

New in Theaters September 28: Looper, Hotel Transylvania and Won't Back Down

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/27/12 at 03:27 PM CT

Last week may have improved slightly over the previous week's box office disappointments, but it was still a far cry from last year's returns. It has been tough going recently with the fall looking a lot like the start of 2012, with many weeks of disappointing numbers. However, if there was one week that could bring a turnaround, I have high hopes this weekend, if only because one of the films be...

New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of September 25

Harley Lond - wrote on 09/25/12 at 01:31 AM CT

This week's highlights:

"The Avengers": I'm not a big fan of movies based on comic books (my rationale for watching the first two "Spider-Mans" mainly was to see Kirsten Dunst ... particularly wet) and I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to my DVD player to watch this amalgam of super heroes teaming up to save the world from destruction. But once I got past the somewhat cor...

Weekend Box Office: Three Films Battle for #1 Spot

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/24/12 at 12:42 AM CT

It's anyone's call at this point who will come out on top after the final numbers are tallied on Monday. It could be a cop drama, a horror film or a baseball drama.

As it stands now, both End of Watch and House at the End of the Street both have $13 million, while the Clint Eastwood-led Trouble with the Curve is very close behind with $12.7 million. Depending on how the final numbers play out,...

New in Theaters September 21: The Master, Dredd, Trouble with the Curve, End of Watch and More

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/20/12 at 04:13 PM CT

Wow - so many movies coming out this weekend, I couldn't even fit them all in the headline! Yet, after weeks of disappointing, low returns, will Hollywood finally be able to celebrate? The good thing about this week is that you have a lot to choose from: brooding drama, horror, sports, action meets found footage and a reboot to boot. Yet that also means that amidst this veritable avalanche of rel...

New on DVD and Blu-Ray the Week of September 18

Harley Lond - wrote on 09/17/12 at 11:02 PM CT

This week's theatrical-to-DVD highlights:

If you expect "The Cabin in the Woods" to be a straight-ahead horror thriller, you're in for a pleasant surprise. When a rambunctious group of five college friends steal away for a weekend of debauchery in an isolated country cabin, they're attacked by horrific supernatural creatures in a night of endless terror and bloodshed. But as the ...

Weekend Box Office: Resident Evil Retribution Tops Finding Nemo 3D

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/16/12 at 10:48 PM CT

Despite looking much better than last week's disastrous box office, the one-two punch of zombies and cute, animated fish couldn't do much to bolster a weak fall lineup that has plagued Hollywood.

Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth film in the series, took in $21.1 million for first place. The total looks great compared to last week's $9.3 million opener, but it's noticeably lower opening t...

New in Theaters September 14: Finding Nemo in 3D and Resident Evil: Retribution

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/13/12 at 06:18 PM CT

A week after one of the worst weekends on record for Hollywood can the box office hope to make a full recovery? That remains to be seen, but I have a feeling that the two movies opening this weekend stand a much better chance of capturing an audience than anything that has opened before Labor Day. The main reason is that both films opening have a built-in audience - one is a franchise that has se...

This week's theatrical-to-DVD highlights:

"Snow White and the Huntsman" is the latest entry in the twisted-fairy-tale skein that's enthralled Hollywood for the past few years -- and we hope the last (it won't be; next year we have "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" and in 2014 we can look forward to "Maleficent"). "Snow White and the Huntsman" is notable for a decent but not impr...

Weekend Box Office: The Possession Leads Weakest Box Office in Four Years

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/09/12 at 10:50 PM CT

We all know that September is a typically slow month for movies, but even for a slow month this weekend was a disaster for Hollywood. No movie managed to break $10 million and the top 12 movies only brought in $51.7 million - 37% worse than any other weekend in 2012 and the lowest-grossing total since 2008, when Bangkok Dangerous led the weak charge to a $50.3 million total.

The Possession sca...

New in Theaters September 07: The Words and The Cold Light of Day

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/06/12 at 03:00 PM CT

Last Labor Day weekend, a typically slow week for movies, the horror film The Possession managed to snag the top spot over the star-packed Lawless. It's been a bit slow the last few weeks and I have a feeling this weekend will be no different. Though there are two new films premiering, I don't think either one is going to make a significant impact at the box office and The Possession, though it's...

New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of September 4

Harley Lond - wrote on 09/04/12 at 12:23 PM CT

This week's theatrical-to-DVD highlights:

If you're a Jason Statham fan, like me, then the bullet-headed action hero can do no wrong. But that might not apply to all his movies, and "Safe" is a case in point. The film begins with a promising premise: a washed-up cage fighter whose family has been murdered by the Russian Mafia after he blows a rigged fight becomes the protector to...

Holiday Weekend Box Office: The Possession Scares Up 2nd-Best Labor Day Opening

Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/03/12 at 07:40 PM CT

It's no secret that Labor Day weekend is usually pretty slow for movies. Most people prefer to travel rather than take in a movie. But at least this weekend had a few bright spots, and one historically horrendous debut, that let summer go out with a slight bang.

After the disappointing debut of The Apparition, it looks like audiences were still in the mood for horror, as The Possession took th...
