I loved all the Japan-inspired artwork (especially the still images), but found the dogs less interesting, both visually and in terms of the storyline. In general, I like Wes Anderson better when he tells stories set in the human world, with real actors.

Wes Anderson's wildly ambitious stopmotion film boasts wonderfully detailed animation and a good voice cast. The plot proves unbalanced at times though, juggling a boys own adventure story but also political intrigue and social commentary. Plus the expected Wes Anderson quirks. But its darker tone compared with most American animated movies and highly stylized world make it an interesting alternative to the usual cookie-cutter fare.

The story line of Atari Kobayashi reminded of The Little Prince that instead of fox (which Anderson had an animated movie already), it explored the natural connection of humans and dogs. I bet not only Anderson fans would appreciate this film, but those who have eternal love for dogs. Also, I felt like the choice of Japanese culture to be integrated in the story was perfect because of the plot devices of dog robots an...

Anderson's new foray into stop-motion territory

In 2009 Wes Anderson directed the stop-motion film “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, which was met with great commercial success and critical acclaim, earning an Academy Award nomination for best Animated Feature, with some even claiming it deserved to win. Nine years later he’s back at it with an adventure that involves animals and humans, a great deal of his characteristic deadpan humour, and thousands of perfectly symmetrical shots. Visually stunning, charming and with a really big heart, “Isle of Dogs” is a worthy addition to Anderson’s already impressive canon.

The story takes place in Japan in the near future. An outbreak of the canine flu has lead the cat-influenced-government to take the drastic decision of sending all infected dogs to an island that is basically a trash wasteland, a dump ...
